Hammertoes

Hammertoes

What is a hammertoe?

Hammertoes deformity of the lesser toes are where a toe is bent at the middle joint which resembles a hammer.  These deformities typically start as flexible deformities however over time if left untreated can become rigid.

Symptoms

Most people with hammertoes develop corns or calluses on the top of the middle joints of the toe or at the tips of the toes. This may result in pain and difficulty finding comfortable shoes. In the majority of cases, most people complain about pain from the top with her toes rubbing against the shoe.

Causes

Hammertoes are the result of muscle imbalances, improper fitting shoes or combinations of both.

Treatments

There are many treatment options including new shoes that have a roomy toe box. Shoes should be one half of an inch longer than your longest toe. Avoiding things like high heeled shoes, tight and narrow shoes may help as well. Sandals may help, as long as they do not pinch or rub other areas of the foot. Shoe inserts may also help. In times where conservative treatments have failed, your Foot and Ankle Surgeon may recommend surgical correction of the deformity. Every patient is unique and the procedure is dependent on the type of deformity and extent of the deformity. Hammertoes are usually corrected on an outpatient basis in which same day surgery is done where the patient goes home a few hours after the surgery is performed. After the surgery, there may be some stiffness, swelling, and redness and the toe may be slightly longer or shorter than before. You will be able to walk, but should not plan any long hikes while the toe heals, and you should keep your foot elevated as much as possible. Dr. Pajouh takes real pride in his hammertoe corrections and has a thorough understanding of the uniqueness of each deformity. Please make an appointment with Dr. Jonathan Pajouh to further discuss which treatment option best fits you.
